Students in 7th and 8th

We have just begun a new chapter exploring adjectives. In this unit we will be comparing adjectives, learning about irregular adjectives, utilizing adverbs, comparing adverbs, understanding negatives and catagorizing words. This chapter is just what students need to reinforce previous skills learned, and add to their knowledge of exemplary writing skills. Adjectives and adverbs add life to writing and help us create vivid images in our minds.

Students have just completed a creative writng story that incorporated the theme of love. The beginning of their story was to use vivid imagery to create the atmosphere of their piece. Thus far I have been impressed with the level of effort student's have demonstrated in their work, and am pleased with the progression of writing skills utilized. In addition, the original art work used on their covers were fabulous, and their personalities shine through and is a pleasure to behold!

Keep up the great work!  :)

Literature

Welcome to Literature with Mrs. Wainio

7th Grade Literature

7th grade is currently reading "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry."  This award winning book is jam packed with all the elements of a fantastic read. Students have been describing the many tragic events that occur throughout the story, and have been incorporating and applying all that they have learned up to now in their reading response journal.

Thus far students have learned about major and minor characters and whether or not they are round, flat, static or dynamic. In addition, how does the author of this novel convey the characteristics of each character to the reader? (How they speak, the things they do, what other characters say about them etc.)

Your student should be able to tell you the setting of the story and whether or not the setting is considered to be a major or minor setting.  Can your student tell you what  the conflicts in this story are, and if they internal or external conflicts. The rising conflict in this story is extremely intense. Can your students tell you about these. This story, set in a time of inequalities and extreme racism, can be difficult to read as some parts are sorrowful and full of suffering.  How does this relate to our Christian values and what can we learn from this story? Question your students and see how much they can tell you about this Newberry Medal  winner.

All students have been asked to add themselves to the website Goodreads.  In this website students log the novels they have read, give book reviews, rate books and log updates on their current status in reading books. This technology helps other students to be encouraged to read books and increase their literacy. Sharing of books is encouraged and the incorporation of technology tends to get students exited about reading even more books.  Encourage your child to post summaries and reviews, and see what other students in middle school at St. Rose of Lima are reading. Extra credit has already been given to participating students who logged on the first day assigned. Please tell students I would prefer they only add our students from the 7th and 8th grade.

Happy reading!

Social Studies

Fuedalism and the manor system, the rise and fall of cities, the power of the Church, The Crusades, and the power of kings are some of the subjects we have been exploring in our studies of Europe in the Middle Ages.  Thus far, students have discussed what types of governments were formed in societied of this time period, the patterns of day-to-day life, belief systems and their effect history. Students compared and contrasted concepts learned in this unit, to today's times and determined changes in thinking especially in religion.

Stained glass windows atistically crafted during the midieval period were beautiful to behold.  Do you know what significance they had to the church? Your student should be able to tell you.  How long did it take to build a cathedral? What services did clergy offer in these times? What unique opportunity did convents offer to women? Where was the Holy Land where Jesus lived and taught? What was the purpose of the Crusades? See if your student can give you the answer to these questions.

Your child has chosen a topic for a 10 slide, Power Point presentation.
Make sure  your home computers are up and running and they have a portable hard drive, thumb drive or other way to turn their project in to school by the due date, Monday, January 30. Class time will be given to work on this however, most of the work must be done at home. No late projects will be accepted, so be sure and check the progress of your student.
